About CACFT/ACTCF

Our Mission

At the heart of every strong family, every repaired relationship, and every healthier community is someone who chose to do the work. We exist to support those people.

CACFT/ACTCF is Canada's professional home for couples and family therapists. Since 1995, we have championed the growth and recognition of systemic therapy across the country, bringing together clinicians, educators, researchers, and students who share a common belief: that healing relationships changes everything. Our members don't just work with individuals: they strengthen the systems that shape how we live, love, and connect at every level of society.

Whether you're a seasoned practitioner, an emerging therapist, a dedicated researcher, or simply someone who believes in the profound power of this work, you belong here. CACFT/ACTCF is more than a professional association: it's a community united by purpose, and committed to advancing the future of couples and family therapy in Canada.

Who We Are

Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (RMFTs) are relationship specialists trained to help individuals, couples, and families resolve a wide variety of issues and problems. RMFTs adhere to the CACFT/ACTCF Code of Ethics and are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • Rigorous Training:
RMFTs have completed over 1,000 hours of supervised therapy with individuals, couples, and families.
  • Advanced Education:

Members hold graduate-level training in couple and family therapy.

  • System Changers:

We focus on the "system" rather than just the "symptom," helping clients improve functioning at home and in the workplace.

  • Systemic Approach:
We apply systems theory to view and treat individuals and groups.
  • Commitment to Ethics:
All  members adhere to a strict Code of Ethics that protects clients and the community.
  • Honouring Diversity:
Our members are committed to culturally safe and inclusive practice across all backgrounds.

Our Work

RMFTs work with individuals, couples, families, and groups in therapy rooms and community spaces. We research, write, and publish on concerns for systemic health and solutions towards improved wellbeing. We teach students, organizations, and the greater public in the classroom, boardroom, and wherever matter experts are found. We advocate for justice and amplify the voices of the unheard.
