What Is An RMFT?

Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (RMFTs) are relationship specialists trained to help individuals, couples, and families resolve a wide variety of issues and problems. Rather than thinking about their clients in isolation from the world, RMFTs consider the systemic contexts which may affect thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. RMFTs seek to support healthy relationships people have with themselves, each other, and the world around them.

Services provided by Marriage & Family Therapists include:

  • Assessment and treatment of mental and emotional health, and family health
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Relationship counselling
  • Couple and Marriage Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Premarital education
  • Marital enrichment

Couple/Marriage and Family Therapy (C/MFT) is a distinct mental health discipline where a systems theory framework is applied to viewing and treating individuals, couples, families, groups and organizations. The Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT) credential lets the public, and other health professionals, know that those that have earned the right to use the credential have an extremely high level of training, education and experience in the field of C/MFT compared to other psychotherapists.

  • Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (RMFTs) are commonly known as couples therapists, marriage counsellors and family therapists.
  • Many psychotherapists may call themselves Individual, Couple and Family Therapists but only RMFTs have met the very demanding requirements to earn the right to use the RMFT designation.
  • RMFTs are uniquely qualified Relationship Professionals who help people see their situations from new perspectives that supports their strengths and invites change.
  • RMFTs are highly trained Mental Health Professionals who have completed over 1000 hours of therapy with individuals, families, couples and groups while supervised by an RMFT Approved Supervisor.
  • RMFTs have acquired rigorous graduate level training in couple and family therapy.
  • RMFTs help people to see themselves and their situations in more helpful ways in order to create change. RMFTs assist clients to understand and heal relationships with partners, spouses, family members, and friends.
  • RMFTs honour diversity in ability, age, culture, ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, spirituality and socioeconomic status.
  • RMFTs are known as system changers rather than just symptom changers. Research has shown that after receiving treatment from a C/MFT, the majority of clients demonstrated improved functioning in the workplace and a significant improvement in the family.
  • RMFTs adhere to the CACFTs strict Code of Ethics that outlines responsibilities to clients, the profession and the community.
  • RMFTs encourage people to keep life’s most precious relationships resilient and strong.
  • RMFTs are well suited to practice organizational and business systems consulting, especially with family run businesses.
  • RMFTs have brought incredibly positive change to the medical field with the practice of medical family therapy.
MFTs view problems in complex and holistic ways, examining relationships and interactions as significant components of health and optimal functioning.  MFT is one of the five core mental health professions that includes, psychiatry, psychology, social work, psychotherapy and counselling. RMFTs adhere to the CACFT/ACTCF Code of Ethics.
